What Can I Eat After Gastric Band Surgery?

by David Keogh, September 11th, 2013

One of the most common questions we get from patients during consultations is “what can I eat afterwards?” . Many patients assume that they will be on a very strict diet of specific foods each day, which they cannot break no matter what. This belief is entirely untrue!

At Auralia Weight Loss Clinic we believe that patients should still be able to enjoy what they eat whilst still losing weight. After all, eating is an essential part of life, therefore, we should do our best to enjoy it. That said, it should be enjoyed within reason.

We deliberately don’t put our patients on a specific diet which they must strictly follow. Our reasoning behind this is quite simple, they don’t work! Think of all the diets you have undoubtedly tried through your life! So many of them focus around telling you precisely what you need to eat and don’t allow you to deviate from the plan. When it comes down to losing weight, these diets will work in the short term, however, in the long term they won’t. It’s impossible to expect a person to rigidly stick to a set diet for the rest of their lives. With this in mind, we issue all of our patients with a copy of our comprehensive “Gastric Band Nutritional Guides”. These guides go into great detail on how to prepare your meals, what portion size to eat, what type of foods to eat and how you should eat your meals. They also go into full detail on how to choose the correct foods in the supermarket and how to read food labels so you can understand exactly what you’re eating. Although we tell our patients, for example, that they must consume protein in every meal, we allow them to choose whether they want to get that protein from fish, eggs, turkey, chicken, pork, beef or milk, to name but a few! Through many years of research, we have realised that this is the best policy when working with gastric band patients. Doing this allows the patients to continue to make their own decisions, to be independent and to be confident when it comes to knowing what they should and shouldn’t eat. These guides have resulted in an average yearly weight loss of 5 stone for gastric band patients within Auralia Weight Loss Clinic, however, many patients have lost far more than this. In fact, several of our patients have lost up to 10 stone within 1 year following these guidelines. They are NOT a diet! They simply focus around the small things that allow you to make a change in your lifestyle.

In conclusion, when it comes down to it, gastric band patients within Auralia Weight Loss Clinic find it far easier to lose weight and keep the weight off after their gastric band surgery by simply following our guidelines which focus around lifestyle change rather than a diet. Almost all foods can be consumed, within reason, provided they are cooked appropriately. For any person who is worried about feeling deprived of food after their surgery, this is most certainly not the case. We have never had a single patient complain of this after surgery.

Meet Dave
Dave Blog Picture Hi guys my name is Dave and I am the weight loss surgery co-ordinator for Auralia Weight loss Clinic. To give you a brief
introduction to myself, I am an extremely enthusiastic individual and I love to challenge myself to achieve higher targets. I personally know what it is like to lose weight having lost almost 5 stone in one year following a diet and exercise plan which I developed myself. Since then, I have developed an enormous interest in weight loss and I get great satisfaction knowing that I am helping other people achieve their target weights. I love playing sports and I have coaching qualifications in many various activities including rugby and Olympic weight lifting. I have also represented Ireland on a number of occasions in tenpin bowling. The aim of this blog is to give an insight as to what weight loss surgery is actually like, whether that is the gastric band or the gastric balloon. Every week or so I will post a new blog.
