The Benefits of Weight Loss after a Gastric Band
|

Most people, when thinking about the benefits of weight loss, instantly think about health. Indeed, it has been proven time and time again that losing even 10% of your excess weight can play a huge role in preventing or hugely assisting with the management of illnesses such as diabetes, high blood pressure, arthritis, asthma, heart disease, high cholesterol, incontinence, infertility and depression. However, we have observed more so than anything else, that patients speak about their improved quality of life after weight loss.
So what exactly is “quality of life”? This is clearly different for every patient. For some, it’s simply being able to walk without pain or to be able to go out in public without feeling like they are the biggest person there. For others, it’s about being able to exercise again or being confident enough to speak to the opposite sex. In simple terms, it’s the little things that improve your life, it’s the things that make you happy!
I would go as far as saying that a person’s quality of life is the biggest deciding factor for them when opting for a gastric band procedure, in more than 80% of cases. After all, what good is life if you don’t enjoy it?
It’s beyond describable when you see the looks on patient’s faces within a few months of their procedure. There’s a spark in their step, they smile. It’s almost as though the colour has returned to their faces. These people are finally on course to achieving what they have dreamed of for many, many years! They feel as though they have been given their lives back, they feel as though they are in control of their lives! This feeling, in many cases, is completely new to the patients. Before hand, they may have never felt as though they could control themselves. Now, with a little help from the gastric band, they are their own boss, in control of their actions each and every day.
To sum up, the benefits of gastric band procedures go far beyond the visible and illness related aspects. They go much deeper than that, into the mindset of the individual. In the words of Plato “Mens sane in corpora sana”, “A healthy mind is a healthy body”!
